More Than 32K Still Without Power 24 Hours After Storms Smash Through Maryland

Tens of thousands of Maryland residents were still in the dark a day after severe storms left the region in tatters.

Despite working around the clock to make repairs, as of 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, Baltimore Gas and Electric was still reporting 1,415 active outages that were impacting 32,962 of the company's 1,340,185 Maryland customers.

Outages by county: 

  • Anne Arundel: 73 outages affecting 1,406 customers;

  • Baltimore: 618 outages affecting 11,437 customers;
  • Baltimore City: 199 outages affecting 2,249 customers;
  • Calvert: Completely restored;
  • Carroll: 312 outages affecting 14,201 customers;
  • Harford: 165 outages affecting 2,402 customers;
  • Howard: 39 outages affecting 860 customers;
  • Montgomery: 12 outages affecting 196 customers;
  • Prince George's: 12 outages affecting 211 customers.

Westminster in Carroll County was hit particularly hard, with more than 30 poles broken by whipping winds, pinning several drivers in their vehicles while crews worked to rescue them.

Officials said that they expect at least 80 percent of their customers to have power restored no later than 11 p.m. on Tuesday night, though some have posted on social media about possibly having to wait until the early weekend.
